Kiln Transformation窑变
Kiln Transformation, or “Yao Bian” in Chinese, is one of the most fascinating and mysterious phenomena in traditional Chinese ceramic art—especially iconic in Jianzhan (Jian Ware). It refers to the unpredictable, natural changes in glaze color, texture, and pattern that occur during the ultra-high-temperature firing process, resulting from complex chemical reactions between the glaze’s mineral components, the kiln’s atmosphere, and the firing temperature. Unlike artificial painting or engraving, Kiln Transformation is a harmonious collaboration between human craftsmanship and natural forces, making every piece a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that can never be replicated.
